Application

To apply, there are certain requirements and procedures:

  1. Applicants should submit a signed covering letter of introduction, a copy of their passport, and several passport-style photographs.
  2. Applicants:
    a) must not be in conflict with a Lama of theirs,
    b) should provide a letter of recommendation from their Lama or teacher, c) should provide a satisfactory letter of guarantor.
  3. Applicants should provide a certificate of education that shows they have completed a school education of up to at least the twelfth grade or equivalent and the grades they received. It should be issued by either: a) the monastic college of a Tibetan Buddhist monastic institution; or b) a state recognised education institution. If issued by a state recognised education institution, applicants should be able to demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the Tibetan language.
  4. Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, and should provide a medical report confirming this, issued by a recognised medical institution.
  5. Applicants should be willing and able to comply with the rules and regulations of the Institute.
  6. Applicants should provide a police report confirming that they have never engaged in any illegal activity.
  7. Applicants should submit a short letter (of 500 words maximum) explaining: a) their reasons for applying to this particular institution,
    b) the history of their buddhist studies and training, and
    c) their aims for the future.
  8. Applicants must make the commitment to: a) be diligent in their studies
    b) keep good conduct, and
    c) stay within the retreat for the duration of the four years.
    With this in mind, applicants are expected to pay a deposit of 400,000 NPR. If a student fails to honour this commitment, they will be expelled from the Institute and the deposit will be forfeit. If they honour the commitment, the deposit will be returned in full upon completion of the course.
  9. If, due to sickness, a student must leave the retreat and then remains away for more than two months, the student will not be permitted to resume their studies at the Institute.
